Taking A Health Inspector Course

There are many businesses today that if allowed to operate without control could produce a public health hazard.  A restaurant that never cleans its kitchen or washes its dishes in cold water could rapidly cause an epidemic in food diseases.   An apartment house owner that does not provide adequate plumbing or cleanliness could also have a negative impact on public health.  Swimming pool and health club operators must also maintain certain health standards in their establishments.  To insure that the laws are complied with and that places that could become health hazards are kept clean, cities hire health inspectors.  In most case these people must complete a Health Inspector Course to get the job.

To become a health inspector today requires much more than just taking a Health Inspector Course.  To enroll in and take the mere basic requirements will take about a year of training.   Most places are looking for people with a Bachelor's degree in the field and if you intend to make it your career you will be expected to have a Master's degree to function on the management level.   In addition to the formal education there are certificates required to show that you have the knowledge needed to inspect in each area.

The Health Inspector Course for each level of certification is set by law and will vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.   In some areas you can get on the job training with only a high school education.  Once the applicant has the required experience they can take the certification test.  This is the long way to do it and has a limited future as the inspector can only work in the area of his or her certification. In other cases you will not even be allowed to apply for the job without a college degree.   Check with the authorities in the city or state in which you want to work to find out exactly what their requirements are.

Success in this field will require much more than one Health Inspector Course.  According to the U.S. Government Department of Labor most positions require a four year college degree and some require a masters degree.   Other educational requirements include one year certifications programs and two year AA degree programs.  Those that pursue the college degree can expect to make approximately $40,000.00 a year.
